List of Aquatica's Attractions: Water Slides
Dolphin Plunge slides and Commerson's Dolphins
1.) Aquatica's Dolphin Plunge water slides; minimum height 48 inchesFirst on the list of Aquatica attractions are the park's Dolphin Plunge water slides. They're not first on the list because they're particularly wild or because they're the first ones you'll necessarily want to ride. However, they ARE Aquatica's most advertised slides, so you will probably be familiar with them, whether or not you've been to the park. Brochures for Aquatica show riders gliding through a clear tube while dolphins swim all around them. These dolphins are the special, rare black & white Commerson's dolphins...which look somewhat like miniature Shamu whales, too! The pictures seem so idyllic...almost like swimming and interacting with the dolphins. It's a park feature which inspires many people to visit Aquatica.
The sad fact is that Aquatica's Dolphin Plunge slide is nothing like swimming with dolphins. There are many wonderful reasons to visit the Aquatica water park, but don't get your hopes up about beautiful dolphins swimming all around you! For one thing, the dolphin pool is large and the dolphins rarely choose to swim near the slide tubes. For another thing, even if all 4 of them completely surround your tube, you'll be whizzing along briskly as you pass through the pool area---so there's only a brief second that you could spot them. And, thirdly, the thick, rounded tubes aren't easy to see through (which is why aquarium viewing windows aren't made this way.) Even if you could suspend time and linger in the viewing tube, you'd get a so-so view, at best.
Don't worry though; you still CAN enjoy the beautiful Commerson's Dolphins at Aquatica!Riding the Dolphin Plunge water slide isn't a good way to enjoy dolphin-viewing. But fortunately, it isn't the ONLY way to enjoy the Commerson's dolphins at Aquatica! There are 2 other great viewing areas where you WILL see the dolphins swimming and playing together...AND you can get your questions answered about them, too! There's a large, clear underwater viewing window beneath the slide. You can see all 4 of the park's Commersons dolphins playing and interacting with each other...and they seem to swim by the viewing window regularly, too (as you can see from the picture of a Commersons dolphin to your right.) Even better, there's an Aquatica dolphin specialist stationed at the window to tell you all about the animals! You can think of anything you'd like to know about the dolphins, and get your question answered one-on-one!
(Photo note: in the picture of Commerson's Dolphins at Aquatica to your left, you can see the water slide's clear dolphin-viewing tubes in the background.) Taking the Loggerhead Lane "lazy river" ride is another good way to view the dolphins! If you have children too young to zip down the tall Dolphin Plunge slides, you don't have to worry about seeing any sad faces. There's a perfect way for them to view the adorable Commersons dolphins (in addition to standing at the viewing window.) Take the tame "Loggerhead Lane" river tubing ride! While floating along Loggerhead Lane, you'll pass a large, underwater viewing area. You can get good views of the dolphins while, at the same time, enjoying a family-friendly ride. And, if you like fish, there's an aquarium to view, too!
What if you just can't get enough of the beautiful Commerson's dolphins?Come to Aquatica's dolphin-feeding and training sessions! In addition to the slides and dolphin-viewing window, there's still one more way to enjoy the Aquatica's Dolphin Plunge attraction! Any family with dolphin-lovers will want to catch dolphin feeding time. The dolphin-feeding is done by park trainers only. (If you want to feed the dolphins, you CAN do that IF you head to the Sea World theme park next door to Aquatica.) In addition, a short training time occurs, as well. Even though the Commerson's dolphins don't perform tricks for the crowd, they still have a few things to learn! For example, the dolphins need to visit the dentist, doctor and lab regularly. They have learned behaviors they'll need for their medical appointments right here at the Aquatica training sessions! (Things like opening their mouths so their teeth can be inspected, or presenting their fins to the vet.) A sign, like the one you see to your right, will tell you when the next feeding session will be held. There are usually 4 or 5 times per day that you may enjoy this activity at Aquatica...spaced about 2 or 3 hours apart.
List of Aquatica's Water Slides, continued
Do you like racing slides? You'll love the Taumata Racers!
2.) Aquatica's Taumata Racers; minimum height 42 inches tallWhat's the scariest way to ride a water slide? Face down, of course! On Aquatica's Taumata Racer slide, you'll zoom head-first down a steep slope--and view every terrorizing second of the ride! Adrenaline-junkies may find this to be one of the wildest water slides at Aquatica. You'll scream your head off...then troop back up to the top of the slide for more!
What does "Taumata" mean? Taumata is a mountain in New Zealand...and swooshing down the Taumata Racer slide is meant to be an equivalent to zooming down a mountain. All you'll remember, though, is that riding Taumata means "screaming fun!" First, you'll grab a one-person mat at the bottom of the slide. Then, after climbing the stairs to the top, you'll take one of 8 positions on the slide. Riders are dispatched all at one time in order to simulate a water slide race. Before you reach the biggest drop, however, you'll wind around in colorful tubing first. Although none of the tubes get pitch-black, it's best to take one of the yellow or pink tubes if you want to see where you're going to the fullest possible extent. Last of all, you'll find a long straightaway section at the bottom of the hill. Because you'll work up quite a bit of speed on the drop, it's possible to keep right on zooming once you reach the bottom!
Other water slides at Aquatica
3.) Walhalla Wave slide, minimum height 42 inches tall4.) HooRoo Run water slide, minimum height also 42" Situated next to the Taumata Racers, you'll find 2 more of Aquatica's tall water slides: the Walhalla Wave and the HooRoo Run. Both of these slides use the same entrance; there's a splitting point near the top where you'll have to make a final decision about which one you'll ride. (Photo note: you can see the blue Walhalla Wave slide pictured to your left...rising above colorful pink and yellow slides in the children's play area.) What's the difference between these 2 water slides? Both are the same height and use multi-person rafts, but they each have a different "feel" to the ride. The HooRoo Run zooms downhill quickly via a series of drops. It's sure to get your family screaming---especially YOU, when your side of the raft turns & faces backwards, sending you plunging precipitously downhill without any view ahead of you! (And, yes, you'll want to do it again!) The Walhalla Wave gives you a longer ride, since it twists and turns on its way down to the splash pool. But, it's scary, too! For part of the trip down, you'll be in a tube that's fully enclosed...leaving your family to wonder where it's heading in the dark!
5.) Tassie's Twisters bowl ride; no minimum height (see comments below) Your family will enjoy a whirlwind of fun on this tribute to Australia's Tasmanian Devils! The Tassie Twisters are a pair of water slides which end in bowl-shaped cups which give you some time to spin around before you drop into a splash pool. Commonly called "toilet bowl rides," the Aquatica water park version has been scaled down to a smaller size than many bowl rides at other parks, so that younger members of your family may enjoy it, too.
In the picture of Tassie's Twisters bowl ride (to your right,) you can see that the blue slide is shaped differently than the green slide--so that you can ride BOTH of them and not repeat yourself.Tassie's Twister minimum height rules: As stated above, Aquatica currently has no minimum height rules for this ride. However, their guidelines state: "Guests must be able to maintain proper riding position holding on to both handles unassisted." There is a rack of life vests near Tassie's Twisters...and they're free-of-charge to use. If your child is under 48 inches tall, you may as well get him or her outfitted in one of them ASAP when you begin riding on Aquatica's slides and attractions. Most attractions require that kids under 48" tall wear a life jacket. Many adults visiting Aquatica are non-swimmers, too. Never fear; there are plenty of adult life-vests available in addition to the kiddie sizes. Many people wear them on the park's attractions, so you need not feel conspicuous if you choose to "play it safe."
6.) Whanau Way water slides Aquatica may seem to have some whacky names for its water slides...the Whanau Way attraction included. That's because this water park uses an "Australia/New Zealand" theme...and the names of their attractions are related to this theming. So, with this tidbit in mind, "Whanau Way" is actually the perfect name for this set of water slides: Whanau means "family" in the Maori language of New Zealand. And, the Whanau Way water slides are indeed a fun attraction that most members of your family will enjoy!
Like the Tassie's Twister bowl ride, there is no specific minimum age or height requirement for the Whanau Way slides. Aquatica uses the same guideline: "Guests must be able to maintain proper riding position holding on to both handles unassisted."2-passenger tubes are used on this slide, which you'll find at the bottom of the slide area and carry with you up the stairway. There are 2 loading areas for each slide, which will give you and your child time to get situated properly without feeling like you're holding up the line. By the time you're cleared for "take-off," you'll almost surely be ready to roll. The Whanau Way slides are fully enclosed. The lightest tube is the yellow one, on which you'll have no trouble seeing the way ahead of you. The darkest ones are the blue/green tubes, which will give you a more "dark and blind" riding experience. You're fully free to wait for the type of ride experience you want, so be sure to pick a lighter tube for a less frightening ride (if that's what you enjoy best.)
Aquatica's wave pools and lazy rivers
Aquatica's 2 wave pools let you choose "mild or wild"
Aquatica attraction #7--Cutback CoveAquatica attraction#8--Big Surf Shores Aquatica has not one, but 2 wave pools! They're situated side-by-side, so when you first look at them, you'll probably think it's just one giant pool. Yes, they're both similar in size, shape and decor...and yet, you'll get a different swimming and "wave action" experience in each one. Cutback Cove is deeper and the waves feel stronger in the deep water. Cutback Cove is the pool on the left hand side of the two...so teens, adults (and tweens who swim well) will possibly prefer this experience.
On the other hand, families with younger kids will probably prefer the wave pool on the right-hand side of the two...which is called Big Surf Shores. The Big Surf Shores' shallow end extends further into the pool...and the waves seem milder in the shallower water. No tubes nor flotation devices are allowed into Aquatica's wave pools. This fact may disappoint some guests, since lolling around on tubes is usually one of the staple activities in a water park. However, people who love to swim will be absolutely delighted by this rule! Finally, a wave pool where you can swim without being run over by tubes!
Loggerhead Lane is Aquatica's calm "lazy river" ride
9.) Loggerhead Lane lazy river rideLooking for some relaxing and floating time? Grab a tube from the river, hop on, and take a gentle, scenic ride that all ages in your family will probably enjoy. Loggerhead Lane wraps around Tassie's Twister bowl ride, as you see in the picture to your left. But, that's just the beginning of your journey.
You'll float leisurely past lush plantings along the shoreline...and decor features like the beautiful waterfall and attractive palm tree that you see pictured to your right. The highlight of Loggerhead Lane? Viewing the dolphins and fish! All ages of guests will be enchanted with the black and white Commerson's dolphins that they'll find displayed in a clear-blue pool fronted by a large viewing window. A second display features colorful fish in their own separate aquarium.
Feeling energetic? Try Aquatica's WILD river, "Roa's Rapids"
10.) Roa's Rapids not-so-lazy riverIf you're ready for some action, try Roa's Rapids---Aquatica's antidote to lazy river boredom. Not everyone wants to relax...so for those up to a challenge, try whisking along in a quickly moving stream. Along the way, you'll pass faux geological features reminiscent of Yellowstone National Park, including geysers! Though you can't tell the water's speed from the picture of Roa's Rapids to your left, it's brisk enough that full-grown adults don life jackets by the dozens before they enter the flow!
Roa's Rapids surprises you along its course in a number of ways.At times, you'll find water drizzling down on you from overhead. In other spots, you'll pass under archways of water---unless, of course, you miss the arch and get spattered! In still other spots, shooting water comes spouting from so many points in the attraction's decor, you're probably not going to avoid getting squirted at all!
Kiddie attractions at Aquatica
11.) Walkabout Waters water play structure & slides12.) Kata's Kookaburra Cove play area No matter what age your child might currently be, Aquatica features a fun water-play area that will please him or her. Toddlers and preschoolers will love their special area...called Kata's Kookaburra Cove. This play area's shallow water will give them a safe place to toddle about and explore the playground's features. However, Aquatica's biggest and best play area for kids who've reached the height of 36 inches tall is the Walkabout Waters play structure. Do your kids like to roam, explore & climb? The Walkabout play area offers plenty of opportunity!
Do your kids like to have water battles, and get wet under falling water? The Walkabout offers those activities, too. What about water slides? The Walkabout has slides tall enough and zippy enough that your kids won't call them "baby slides." And, adults are welcome to slide down them, too!
