Dueling Dragons Roller Coaster
1 attraction, 2 coasters, 1000's of adoring fans!
In the slide show above, you're viewing pictures of the Dueling Dragons roller coaster at Universal's Islands of Adventure theme park in Orlando, FL.This one attraction features 2 separate roller coasters---named Fire and Ice---whose paths interact with one another along their routes. You'll need to experience BOTH of these coasters to fully understand the attraction as a whole. Will you ride the Dueling Dragons? Maybe the pics and fun facts on this page will help you decide!
The Dueling Dragons roller coaster will make YOU duel with friends:
The question is--Which is better, Fire or Ice?
The Dueling Dragons "roller coaster" isn't really a coaster...It's TWO coasters! The roller coaster tracks are painted red and blue---and these colors may give you the clues you need to guess each track's name. FIRE is the name of the coaster with a red track. And, ICE is the name of the coaster with a blue track. Sounds simple enough. And, it IS! At least, at first. When both coasters begin, they even rise up the same hill together! But when the coasters dive into the first plunge, that's when it gets very clear that these are 2 very different coasters.
And, it's also from that point where the fans of Dueling Dragons can get intensely personal about WHICH of the two coasters they think is better! Some fans think that FIRE is the best; in fact, they're sure of it! But other fans speak just as fiercely in favor of ICE! And, they have their reasons, too! Are Fire and Ice really so different from one another?
Yes; even though "on paper" their stats look pretty similar, they each have different layouts and each one has a different "feel" to it. (We'll talk about the Fire and Ice statistics a little later.)
Of course, since Dueling Dragons spawn so many Dueling Fans, I wouldn't even dare mention which one I feel is better...or try to presume which one that YOU will like best. This is one duel in which I do NOT want to get involved! So, which is better---FIRE or ICE? You'll just have to ride BOTH of them and reach your OWN conclusion! Photo note: In the picture of Dueling Dragons to your left, you can see one of the "near misses" these 2 roller coasters make along the course of their routes!
How tall are the Dueling Dragons?
And how tall do riders need to be to board?
The Dueling Dragons "Fire" and "Ice" roller coasters look similar. They're both suspended coasters which leave rider's feet dangling in the breeze, as you can see in the picture of "Ice" roller coaster (to your left.)In fact, if you're wearing flip flops, you'll need to remove them in order to ride. They could go flying and clonk another rider on the head! But there are more similarities than simply the way these 2 rollercoasters look! They're both identical in height, length of the track, and duration of the ride! The Dueling Dragons roller coasters are both 125 feet tall! And the length of their tracks are both 3200 feet long. (It may be difficult to tell that just from looking, because both tracks are configured differently.) And, you'll spend just under 2 1/2 minutes riding either Fire or Ice, zooming at speeds of about 55 MPH. How similar they sound! Riders need to be 54 inches tall to enjoy the Dueling Dragons roller coaster. This is true BOTH for "Fire" AND for "Ice."
Is there a best place to sit on Dueling Dragons?
The 2 Dueling Dragon roller coasters have several "near misses" along their route. It's part of the themed "dueling" experience! There are 2 things you must know because of this--1.) You can see the near-misses best from the front of each train. Considering that most people will NOT be riding in the front of each train, this is very unfortunate. Riders sit 4-across on each row. This is GOOD for making the line move along faster. It's BAD for those buried in the middle without much of a view. They can't see the effects which are the "high point" of this ride. So, should you wish for FEWER riders so that you'll have a better chance of getting a front seat without much of a wait? Uh...well...that leads to the ride's other problem. 2.) When there isn't much of a crowd, only one coaster runs. So, in other words, having less people in the park might get you into the front seat more easily, but you might not have any "dueling action" to view once you get there! It's disappointing when both Fire and Ice aren't running. But, at least if you understand that it's a possibility, you can "brace yourself" for it ahead of time. Don't worry, though--either of the two coasters will be fun for you to ride even if they're "single" instead of dueling!
