Planning your day at Great Adventure
The height of your family members makes a big difference in your plans
It's easy to advise mega-thrill-seekers what to do at Great Adventure. Get to Six Flags Great Adventure as early in the day as possible, and head directly for Kingda Ka, Nitro, El Toro, Bizarro...or whatever your favorite roller coaster might be. This park gets packed during the summer, and lines are long. In addition to arriving early, you might seriously consider getting a Flash Pass. This is a front-of-line pass which requires a hefty extra expense...but can be well worth the money, especially if you live far away and you can't come back during the spring or fall when the park is less crowded if you miss something. To view a list of rides which are part of Great Adventure's Flash Pass system, please see the last section of this page. For families, the choices of "what to do" at Great Adventure are wider. There are many, many things to do at this huge park...and all of them are fun. You will find kiddie rides and play areas, just as you probably expected you would. But, you may not know that you'll find dolphin shows, just like at your favorite aquatic park. AND animal shows, just as you might have at your favorite zoo. There are characters to meet & greet...and at certain times of the year, a parade and fireworks. Plus shopping for fun character merchandise. Where do you begin? The height of your kids will determine much of what you can see and do here, just like at any theme park. The GOOD news, though, is that there are more things to do at Great Adventure with small children than there are at some other theme parks. On this page, you'll see a listing by "height restriction" of the attractions and activities your family will be eligible to enjoy based on the age and size of your little ones.
6 Flags Great Adventure theme park's
Rides, shows and attractions with NO minimum height requirement
Here's a list of rides and activities you may enjoy no matter how small your kids might be or how timid the grown-ups in your group are. There's no minimum height requirement for these particular shows and rides.Family Shows at Great Adventure: 1.) Dolphin Show: Perhaps the number 1 all-ages highlight not to miss is the Dolphin Discovery show. It's a comedy routine which combines the antics and tricks of the park's dolphins and sea lions along with a humorous banter provided by the humans in the show. If you just can't get enough of these beautiful sea creatures, you would also enjoy the Flippers & Fins behind-the-scenes look at the park's animal training methods. From Memorial day through Labor Day, dolphin-lovers can also opt for an extra-fee Dolphin Encounter program to spend some quality time up close to the dolphins. More expensive "trainer for a day" programs are available for animal-lovers who would like a more in-depth experience. Advance registration is needed (phone number 732/928-2000, ext. 2221.) 2.) Animal-lovers will also want to enjoy viewing Great Adventure's beautiful Bengal tigers. Check your schedule of showtimes as you enter the park so you won't miss the educational & fun trainer talks at the tigers' outdoor habitat in The Golden Kingdom area of the park. You can also see some tiger tricks and learn about tiger-training at the park. An extra-fee Tiger Encounter is available, as well, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. 3.) Character Greetings. You can meet, greet and take pictures with Looney Toons characters such as Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Speedy Gonzales. Mr Six is also at the theme park this year. Also, if you're lucky you may come across one of the DC Comics characters...like Batman or Robin! 4.) Kid's shows: While the entire family will probably enjoy the park's animal shows and character greetings, there are still more shows aimed at families with toddlers, preschoolers and tweens. For example, one popular kid's show features the Looney Tunes characters in a song & dance-filled revue.
FAMILY RIDES WITH NO MINIMUM HEIGHT REQUIREMENT:
1.) The beautiful Big Wheel ferris wheel has no minimum height, and babies are allowed. Kids must be 42 inches tall to ride alone. 2.) Dream Street Skyway: Get a bird's eye view of Six Flags Great Adventure as you glide through the sky in a cable car. Infants are allowed. Children must be 42" in height to ride alone.
NO INFANTS ALLOWED, BUT OTHERWISE NO MINIMUM HEIGHT: 1.) Saw Mill Log Flume: This fun & relaxing floating ride ends with a steep 4-story drop. But if you know your kids can handle it, there's no minimum height as long as an adult rides along; otherwise, there's a 42" height requirement. No babies. 2.) The lovely 19th Century Carousel in Fantasy Forest does not allow babies, but otherwise there is no minimum height requirement when parents join their children; otherwise, 42" is the minimum. 3.) Enchanted Teacups: No minimum height when parents are along; otherwise, there's a 42" minimum. No babies. 4.) Jolly Roger spinning ride, incredibly, has no minimum height when parents ride with kids. Otherwise, being 48" tall is a requirement. Also, no infants. 5.) The Buccaneer Pirate Ship ride has no minimum height (except no infants) when parents are aboard. Otherwise, kids need to be 42 inches tall to join in the fun alone.
KIDDIE RIDE AREAS: 1.) Wiggles World themed area is now called Safari Kids: The cute Wiggles-themed area that you may remember being at Great Adventure for the past several seasons has been re-named (and all of the rides have been given new themes.) So, the GOOD news is that all the same fun kiddie rides are still there. The BAD news is really only for true-blue fans of the Wiggles. ALL of the Six Flags theme parks, including Great Adventure, have cut out their Wiggles-themed areas in a cost-cutting measure (to avoid having to pay the Wiggles creators their royalty fees.) Several of the rides in the Safari Kids area have no minimum height when a parent is aboard WITH THE EXCEPTION that no infants are allowed; kids need to be 42" tall to ride alone (or 36" tall to enjoy the play ship without an adult.) 2.) Looney Tunes Seaport kiddie rides: Looney Tunes fans need not fear: all of the Looney Tunes characters WILL still be at the Six Flags theme parks. That's especially good for Great Adventure...because they have TWO kiddie ride areas named after the Looney Tunes pals. At the Looney Tunes Seaport, parents can join in on most attractions. No minimum height is required when parents come along at the following attractions: Bugs Bunny Barnstormers, Bugs Bunny Fun Factory (indoor play area), Daffy's Deep Diver, PePe LePew's Heart's Aweigh teacups, Road Runner Railway, Taz's Tornado swing ride, and Yosemite Sam's Flight School. Despite there being no minimum height requirement, infants are not allowed on most of these rides. 3.) Bugs Bunny National Park: In yet another kiddie section of the park, you'll find still more fun ways to entertain your toddlers and preschoolers! The following rides have no minimum height requirement when kids are accompanied by an adult; however, infants are not allowed. Bugs Bunny Camp Carousel; Daffy Duck's Hot Air Balloons; and Porky Pig Camp Wagons. 4.) Balin's Jungleland: You certainly can't say that Six Flags Great Adventure doesn't want families! Here's still another kiddie area...and it, too, has rides with no minimum height requirement. No babies, however, are allowed. Tigerland Treehouse play area, Splashwater Oasis water play area, and Cub's Corner play structure.
Six Flags Great Adventure's
Rides & Attractions with a 36-inch minimum height
You'll be able to add more rides to your family's "can do" list if your children are all over 36" tall. Here's a list of attractions your family may enjoy that have a 36" minimum height IF an adult rides along. The height requirement may be greater if your kids plan to ride alone.Parachute Training Center: Edwards AFB: This tall tower ride looks frightening...and you alone will know if your child is ready for the experience. With an adult, the minimum height is only 36", but it increases to 42" if you won't be riding along. Bugs Bunny National Park kid's area: The Bugs Bunny Ranger Pilots plane ride does not allow adults, and your kids need to be 36" tall to ride alone. The Wile E Coyote Canyon Blaster allows adults, and if you ride with your child, the minimum height is 36" tall. It's 42" in height if you plan to watch from the sidelines. Looney Tunes Seaport themed area: The Congo River Rapids ride is a white-water rafting ride that all ages will enjoy...especially on hot summer days! Though 36" is the minimum height when kids join the family, they'll need to be 42" tall to ride alone.
Great Adventure theme park's
family coasters & attractions with a 41-44" minimum height requirement
There are a few rides at Great Adventure which have a 41 inch, 42 inch or 44 inch minimum height requirement, even if kids ride with an adult. Children at this height can still get into the park with a kid's ticket. These rides are---The Dark Knight Coaster in the park's Movietown themed area requires kids to be 42" to ride with an adult...or 48" tall to ride alone. Blackbeard's Lost Treasure Train is a roller coaster which has a 41" height requirement if an adult is along, but 48" minimum if not. Rolling Thunder wooden roller coaster: This classic ride requires guests to be 44 inches tall, with or without an adult riding along. The Runaway Mine Train, another roller coaster that kids will enjoy, also has a 44" minimum height requirement, with or without parents along. Skull Mountain indoor roller coaster: Requires all guests, with or without an adult, to be 44 inches tall. Extra fee attractions: Both the scary Dare Devil Dive ride and the Great American Road Race go karts require young guests to be 42" tall to come along with parents.
6 Flags Great Adventure's list of major roller coasters and thrill rides
A 48" to 54" minimum height requirement is needed for those who wish to ride
There's a reason why kids over 48" tall need an "adult" ticket to enter Great Adventure---and that's because all the park's best thrill rides have at least a 48" height requirement. The minimum height doesn't necessarily have anything to do with how scary the ride FEELS...but, instead, whether or not the restraint system will work well with shorter riders. In 2011, thrill-lovers will get a NEW roller coaster: the Green Lantern! The Green Lantern coaster at Great Adventure will be a stand-up roller coaster which reaches speeds of up to 63 MPH, and will make 5 inversions during the 2 1/2 minute course of this ride. Expect it to be VERY popular! And, DON'T even bother getting in line unless you're 54" tall or more...because that will be the Green Lantern's minimum height. Here's the list of the other Great Adventure roller coasters and thrill rides which have very tall minimum height requirements-- El Toro wooden roller coaster; minimum height required is 48 inches tall. Batman the Ride requires guests to be 54" tall for this inverting steel roller coaster. Superman: Ultimate Flight is a "flying" roller coaster with a minimum height of 54" for all guests. Bizarro is an inverting floorless roller coaster with a 54" minimum height requirement. The Eruption tower ride requires all guests to be 52" tall in order to board. The Great American Scream Machine roller coaster will NOT be operating at Great Adventure for the 2011 season. It was removed to make way for the park's Green Lantern standing roller coaster. Kingda Ka, the world's tallest roller coaster, requires a 54" minimum height. The terrific Nitro roller coaster requires a 54" height to board. The Twister upside-down inverting ride requires a 54" height requirement. Houdini's Great Escape will be open for the 2011 season between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Minimum height is 48 inches.
Great Adventure's Flash Pass list
For what rides can you use a Flash Pass at the NJ Six Flags?
Like most Six Flags theme parks, Great Adventure offers guests the chance...for a hefty fee...to bypass long lines at its top roller coasters and thrill rides. What's new with the Great Adventure Flash Pass this year? There's now a 3rd and more expensive Flash Pass that's been added. Called the Platinum pass, this new pass allows you to wait in line once...then ride TWO times! The other 2 Flash Pass levels at Great Adventure, called the Regular and the Gold Flash Passes, charge their fees depending on how much time you want to cut. When the park isn't too crowded, the "regular" Flash Pass (which is related to the average wait time of the rides that day) will do just fine. By the time you walk from one ride to another, it will almost be your turn. Its cost is a "moderate" $45 for 1 person. But when the park is super-crowded, you might want a Gold-level Flash Pass (expensive; $80 for 1 person) because the Gold Pass aims at cutting out 75% of your waiting time. So, essentially, then, the Platinum Pass will be like the Gold Pass in saving the most time...but in addition, you'll get to ride twice once you board. The charge for the Platinum Flash Pass at Great Adventure will be a whopping $115; lots of fun, if you've got the cash! Here are the rides that are part of Great Adventure's Flash Pass system: Roller Coasters:Kingda Ka Nitro Bizarro Superman: Ultimate Flight El Toro wooden coaster Batman the Ride Rolling Thunder Runaway Mine Train Skull Mountain Dark Knight Coaster Other rides: Big Wheel Congo Rapids Buccaneer Saw Mill Log Flume Twister Unfortunately, the erUPtion tower ride is not part of the park's Flash Pass system.
