Minnesota theme parksValleyfair; phone number 952-445-6500. Location: Shakopee, MN (Minneapolis area.) Website: www.valleyfair.com A Cedar Fair park. Operating schedule: Seasonal. Soak City water park included with admission; a robust list of family & kiddie rides, and adjacent mini golf & go carts (extra fee) are all good reasons you will want to give Valleyfair a try. Thrill lovers will want to try Steel Venom (175 ft drop/up to 68 mph; 90 degree vertical; 5 launches) and Wild Thing (207 ft drop, 74 mph, "world's largest weightless zones.") Annual "ValleySCARE" Halloween Haunt.
Missouri theme parksSilver Dollar City; phone number (417) 338-2611. Location: Branson, MO. Website: www.SilverDollarCity.com Operation schedule: Seasonal. Live musical shows, expert crafts demos and even a tour of Marvel cave are all part of your admission (in addition to the park's rides & coasters.) However, the White Water water park (nearby; under same ownership) costs an extra fee. Seasonal celebrations include the Harvest Festival in Sept/Oct (not a Halloween-themed event) and the annual "Old Time Christmas" celebration Nov/Dec. New ride for 2010: Tom & Huck's River Blast, half log-raft ride...and half water battle (against the spectators on the shore!) Six Flags St. Louis; phone number (636) 938-5300. A good selection of major roller coasters & thrill rides combined with family & kiddie attractions and an inside-the-gate water park make Six Flags St Louis a well-rounded theme park destination. Operational schedule: Seasonal. List of roller coasters includes the Prowler, which was Amusement Today's pick for Best New Theme Park Ride of 2009. The Mamba coaster gets guest screaming fast with a 205 ft drop & speed of 75 mph. Other coasters, thrill rides & family fun give visitors plenty to do all day long. Major Halloween event. (Note: The adjacent Oceans of Fun water park requires a separate ticket.) New for 2010: Snoopy's Hot Summer Lights interactive nighttime display.
Nevada theme parksCircus Circus Adventuredome; phone number (702) 794-3939. Location: Las Vegas, NV (on the Las Vegas Strip at the Circus Circus Hotel.) Website: www.adventuredome.com Operational schedule: Daily year-round. Amazing indoor park that packs in more rides & attractions than you'd ever expect...including a scream-inducing roller coaster! Both kids AND teens/adults will have enough for them to enjoy an afternoon here. Extra fee activities include mini-golf and games of skill. Major Halloween celebration called "Frightdome" features the eeriest atmosphere; because it's roofed, the machine-made fog lingers to hide lurking monsters. Open throughout December, but no Christmas event.
New Hampshire theme parksCanobie Lake Park; phone number (603) 893-3506. Location: Salem, NH. Website: www.canobie.com (website gets automatically redirected to www.canobiehaunts.com in October.) Operation: Seasonal. Family-oriented park with plenty to do for kids and families; some thrill rides, as well. The Yankee Cannonball wooden coaster is a beloved antique, in operation since 1936. Also, the 73 foot tall Canobie Corkscrew steel coaster offers fun for thrill-lovers. Major Halloween event in October.
New Jersey theme parksSix Flags Great Adventure; phone number (301) 249-1500. Located in Jackson, NJ/Trenton area. Here is the Six Flags Great Adventure website, which is a section of www.SixFlags.com. Operating schedule: seasonal. One of the USA's top 20 theme parks in attendance, welcoming over 2 1/2 million visitors per year (all in the same day, it may seem.) Features an outstanding array of activities. It's a roller coaster powerhouse, including the world's tallest, fastest roller coaster, Kingda Ka. Though the world record will be shattered soon (by a German resort,) it will still remain the tallest & fastest coaster in the USA. The park's El Toro is a favorite US wooden coaster. Family rides abound, plus zoo attractions...and marine-animal shows are also offered. Adjacent water park and wild animal park (separate admissions.) Major annual Halloween event.
New Mexico theme parksCliff's; phone number (505) 881-9373. Location: Albuquerque, NM. Website: www.CliffsAmusementPark.com Operation: Seasonal. New Mexico's largest roller coaster, the New Mexico Rattler, can be found here...along with family-friendly rides, kiddie rides and a water-play area.

Nice mix of thrill rides, family & kiddie attractions, and water park inside the gate. Ride of Steel coaster (drops 208 feet/70 mph) is a favorite. Family-oriented park with a mix of moderate thrill rides, water rides, family & kiddie attractions; Splashwater Kingdom water park admission included. New for 2010: Intimidator high-speed roller coaster, 232 feet tall, speeds of 75+ mph.

One of the USA's Top 20 theme parks, with attendance over 3 million each year. Cedar Point is a renowned roller coaster powerhouse (the top USA park for coaster "pilgrimage" visits)...but also features plenty of family fun, as well. Adjacent water park. Major annual Halloween event. Kings Island; phone number (513) 754-5700. Location: Mason, OH (Cincinnati area.) King's Island website is www.VisitKingsIsland.com A Cedar Fair park. Operating schedule: Seasonal. King's Island is a Top 20 theme park in the USA, opening its gates to over 3 million visitors annually. Features include a good selection of major roller coasters (including the award-winning Diamondback) and thrill rides, family rides, water park, entertainment. Major Halloween event. Frontier City specializes in family-rides and attractions. However, the park's Eruption tower ride is the tallest thrill ride in Oklahoma (at 240 ft tall.) Sister-park, the White Water Bay water park, requires separate admission (except for double-park season pass holders.) Major Halloween event.

Wild Water Kingdom water park attractions are included with admission. Steel Force leads the way in thrills here; with a 205 foot drop, this blazing coaster reaches 75 MPH. Close behind in height is the park's 200 ft tower ride. Other thrills; and the Possessed coaster reaches 184 ft with a 90 degree angle & speed up to 70 mph. Good selection of family-friendly rides, pool, water slide, mini-golf and family Halloween event. Foodies should note that Knobels has won the Golden Ticket Award (from Amusement Today) for 11 years in a row (including 2009.) New for 2010: Flying Turns bobsled-style coaster to open; Black Diamond family roller coaster (which was formerly the Gold Nugget coaster at Morey's Piers in NJ.)

Families enjoy award-winning entertainment & demonstrations by master craftsmen in addition to the park's line-up of rides. Thunderhead wooden coaster featuring a 100 foot drop and speeds to 55 mph, is a favorite of thrill-loving guests. Octobers: Gospel Music & Harvest Festival. "Wicked," a one-of-a-kind launched roller coaster, reaches a 110 ft height, has a 90 degree ascent & descent, and speeds of 55. Families enjoy the park's rides and water park attractions. The Timberhawk: Ride of Prey wooden coaster is 75 tall & reaches speeds of 50 mph. Annual Halloween event.
Wisconsin theme parksMt Olympus Water & Theme Park; phone number 608-254-2490 (local) and 800-800-4997 (toll-free.) Location: Wisconsin Dells, WI. Website: www.MtOlympusPark.com Operating schedule: Both seasonal AND year-round. Sound confusing? Here's the answer: Mt Olympus has BOTH indoor & outdoor theme park and water parks. The outdoor attractions are seasonal, while the indoor attractions are year-round. (There is a reduced price for winter season tickets.) The major thrills are located in the outdoor parks. Hades, the wooden coaster awarded "Best New Ride" in 2005 by Amusement Today, features a 140 ft drop and 70 mph speeds. Hosts a Halloween event.
